Mover and shakers - Dentsply student clinician awards

2011 BDA/Dentsply student clinician awards

The 34th annual Student Clinician Programme Awards, sponsored by Dentsply and supported by the BDA and DDU, celebrated the hard work of the dental students involved and the valuable contribution they made to the future of their profession.

Participating students each completed a research project on an area of their choice, with entries from 16 dental schools across the UK and Ireland scrutinised by a panel of experts.

The names of the winners and runners up (pictured) were announced at the prestigious gala event held in Wicklow, near Dublin in February.

First place went to Deema Marzouq for her presentation on ethical issues with the use of animal-derived products in periodontics. Her prize is a trip to October’s American Dental Association Annual Session in Las Vegas as a guest of Dentsply.

Second place went to Thomas Hughes for his presentation on the suspension bioreactor culture of embryonic stem cells for cost-effective applications within regenerative dentistry.

Franchise move for Ultrasmile

Ultrasmile, the award-winning east London practice, is moving into franchising. The business was set up by principal Dr Thang Nghiem and his brother Khoi Nghiem and is a leading centre for cosmetic and general dentistry, being named Practice of the Year at the Private Dentistry Awards in 2007. Many other awards have been attained, both inside and outside of dentistry.

UltraSmile has worked extensively with a top PR agency and has invested heavily in building up a nationally recognised brand. As a result, it has treated many celebrity patients such as Karren Brady (The Apprentice), Liam Treadwell (Grand National Winner 2009), Kimberley Walsh (Girls Aloud) and many more.

Potential Ultrasmile franchisees have the opportunity to tap into the established success of the business including in-house training, business strategies, marketing material and supplier discounts.

LCIAD celebrates new premises

Dr Koray Feran (pictured) celebrated the official opening of the new London Centre for Implant and Aesthetic Dentistry on Wimpole Street recently, with a gathering of colleagues, friends and family.

The practice’s new premises includes three state-of-the-art surgeries, a sterilisation room, a spacious waiting room and imminent plans for a two room on-site laboratory.

‘The entire practice has been designed to look clean, uncluttered and welcoming with a touch of West End elegance,’ Dr Feran said. ‘We want to encourage practitioners not to be afraid of referring their patients. My handpicked associates are more than willing for referring dentists to watch their patient’s treatment at the surgery, and will mentor those clinicians who would prefer to undertake re-treatment themselves.’

Successful acquisition for Velvet Group

The Velvet Group is continuing to expand, having just acquired the Augusta Dental Practice in Leamington Spa. The acquisition was made by The Business Company - a Midlands-based consultancy with a track record as business improvement specialists within the dental sector - which has been retained by Velvet Group to develop strategies for future practice acquisition and integration, including developing its brand concept, delivery model and values in line with the customer-centred delivery model which resulted in the dynamic ‘hub and spoke’ concept for the group.

The Business Company has previously helped Velvet acquire The Dental Spa in Shrewsbury, which is the firm’s groundbreaking hub practice.

Dr Mark Walsh is doing a great job. He needs our support but I would also like to congratulate Dentsply for what they are doing. It’s good to hear that people still think about these things rather than wasting their time on Facebook.
